JOB DESCRIPTION
Duties
The Melon Breeder at San Luis Obispo Seeds, Inc. d/b/a US Agriseeds in Woodland, CA will be responsible for the melon breeding program. Maintain detailed knowledge of global melon markets and production areas. Develop, maintain, and improve melon varieties for domestic and international target markets. Design and implement breeding strategies, including inventory management, seed harvesting and storing, and data management. Manage all components of a successful commercial melon breeding program, including management of existing germplasm, acquisition of new germplasm, development of elite inbred lines and hybrids, and production of breeder seed of elite lines. Collect, maintain, and characterize genetic resources for melon crops. Develop trait linked molecular markers to be used in marker-assisted selection. Develop strategies for the efficient utilization of trait linked molecular markers in identifying genetically superior genotypes. Develop pathogen and disease assays to test disease resistance. Test hybrids and inbreds for heterozygosity and homogeneity. Evaluate genetic materials for various horticultural and disease resistance traits. Breed plants for economically important traits. Identify the best parental lines for hybrid seed production. Plan nursery cycles for selfing and crosses, variety trials and advance hybrids, including authoring descriptions of varieties for both internal use and for the creation of marketing materials. Salary: $87,400 – $105,000.
EXPERIENCE
- Requirements: A PhD in plant breeding or a directly related field, plus two years of experience developing, maintaining, and improving melon varieties for domestic and international target markets. The two years of experience must include two years of experience with each of the following: (1) designing and implementing breeding strategies, including inventory management, seed harvesting and storing, and data management; 2) planning and executing cross and selfing blocks, variety trials, and hybrid advancement, including authoring descriptions of varieties in nomination form; 3) collecting, maintaining and characterizing genetic resources for melon crops; and 4) coordinating all inventory management, planting, and sowing activities.
